Nothing like a good ‘ol mcc sale

Wow, time keeps moving on at amazingly quick speeds. Just the other day I was on the way to class and notice the leaves falling in Srock Plaza and realized, oh yeah, I guess it is almost fall! Not that fall is bad mind you. In fact fall in these parts means the coming of the Michiana MCC Sale! :-D The Walter Schan Memorial TrophyThis morning I got to take in the sights, sounds, and of course tastes of the MCC sale with Beth, Brandon, and Naomi. Pancakes, sausage, apple cider, apple fritters, pie, ice cream, and that’s just the food that I personally ate before we finally hit the road.

The MCC sale also resulted in the addition of a new Mac to our house. Nate spotted two Macs on sale for super cheap and couldn’t resist. So now, after an afternoon’s worth of work, he is the proud owner of a Mac Classic II MacQuarium! I’m actually a little bummed because making a MacQuarium has been one of those projects that I’ve always kinda wanted to do but never actually got around to, and now he beat me to the punch. But it’s all good, I definitely won’t complain about having one in our house.

On an unrelated note, Goshen has some pretty cool music stuff happening! Last Thursday on my way to work I wandered through the weekly bluegrass jam outside of Umble. What a cool idea! Especially when you have plenty of talented, interested, people available.

Oh, and if you’re wondering about the trophy… yup, it’s the “Walter Schan Memorial Trophy” which I now proudly display in my window. lol, aren’t STA awards great!

The busyness of school

Well it’s official, music is awesome and there is not NEARLY enough time or money to enjoy enough of it. This past weekend was Windfield and I missed it!! :-( John McCutcheon & Tommy Emanuel at Winfield No Small Potatoes, John McCutcheon, Tom Chapin, Spontaneous Combustion, Cherish the Ladies, OR Tommy Emmanuel for me this year. *sigh* It’s a darn shame that Kansas is far away, and gas is expensive, and so are tickets. Then again, it’s not like I don’t have my fill of entertainment around here. I’ve come to realize just how prime of a location we have here at Goshen for concerts. Detroit is a bit of a drive, but manageable for a good show (aka Coldplay). And now Chicago is proving to be TOO good of a source of entertainment because Bruce Cockburn and Ben Folds both have concerts there! The same week!! Dang lack of an infinite supply of free concert tickets. So in the end as much as Bruce’s music is awesome I decided to spring for Ben Folds. YAY, another solid concert to look forward too! :-D

Song of the week: Such Great Heights by The Postal Service. I found Iron And Wine’s recording of this song first but after finding the original find it hard to go back.

Aren’t politics so fun?

Well, not that I’ve become excessively politically aware or anything, but I’ve been reading BBC news a lot more recently and sometimes the articles I stumble across just make me think. For example the article about Bush asking for a bathroom break during the UN World summit. Come on man, can’t you plan ahead! Then the other day I found an article: FEMA Foible about how FEMA’s online application form for emergency relief only works for people with Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater, meaning people who use Macs, or Linux are out of luck (not to mention Windows users who’ve switch fully to Firefox). This also had me kinda ticked, why design a site that only works for some people?? It’s not THAT hard to make a site that works for different browsers!

Except that then I let myself cool down a bit. In reality, why am I getting so worked up about things like this. Granted, it’s fun to poke fun at Bush which is why so many satire sites picked up on this. But really we all know that Everybody Poops and the only reason I might care is because I have a personal beef with him? And about FEMA and their little website situation, I read some comments at This Is Broken that really made sense. This form originally was meant for internal use (where unfortunately they all use IE on PCs) and was only made public after Katrina to help people get the aid they need asap. And if you really think about it, right now FEMA has a LOT more pressing issues on it’s hands than updating it’s website. So maybe this is what I’m coming to… Yeah, it’s definitely fun to pick on other people’s slip-ups, but really, if It’s not a big deal, take it easy!

Good ‘ol Bush

Well, I watched Fahrenheit 9/11 again last night. Bush : Disaster I know… nobody is perfect and I’m sure that most people who run for office today have way more corporate ties that I would ever like, but still. It really is a shame to even have to suspect that so much of foreign polity is based in the economic gain of big corporations. Regardless, Beth’s mom sent this picture to her and I got a pretty good chuckle out of it, I hope you enjoy it too.

On a completely unrelated note… as seems to happen often on this site… I now how pictures from my dad and my hike up Mt. Huron (a Colorado 14er) online. I’ll probably even get ‘em captioned eventually.

Of college ingenuity

Well, as I’ve mentioned before my class schedule is giving me plenty of free time and when a good idea comes your way it’s just hard to pass up! That’s how I managed spending huge chunks of time over the past 5 or so days building GCmovies.org. Dirk Leichty originally came up with the plan of listing movies available on campus and it didn’t take me too much searching to find videoDB, which made my job a whole lot easier. I let Nate & Dirk do the publicity and appointed myself as webmaster. And now, countless hours of tinkering and tweaking later, Goshen has it’s own free movie database! No more spending ridiculous amounts of money at Blockbuster to see something I can borrow for free! :-) As of today there’s over 400 titles to choose from and with any luck there’ll be a lot more where those came from. Anywho, enough rambling about that, yeah, I’m a geek, it was fun, what can I say :-)
