Science Friday

A quick note first: If it’s been a little while since you’ve visited the wedding site, check it out. It’s been updated to link to several wedding photo galleries!

Now back to the science :-D I’m not going to try to compete with actual Science Friday, but a few headlines caught my attention over the past weeks. First off, Paul MacCready passed away on Tuesday. If you don’t recognize the name, don’t worry, neither did I actually, but it turns out he was an innovator in the field of human-powered flight and I had head of a few of his projects. For example, he built the Gossamer Condor & the Gossamer Albatross, airplanes both powered by a person pedaling as if they were riding a bike. The Albatross was used to fly across the English Chanel! He also worked on projects like NASA’s Helios. Cool stuff & an amazingly creative guy.

Imagining the Tenth DimensionThe other science-related link I wanted to pass on is a video clip. It is entitled “Imagining the Tenth Dimension” and I found it rather fascinating to watch. The first three minutes or so are spent describing the 3 dimensions you & I are most familiar with. But as the number of dimensions gets larger things get more and more mind-bending. So, if you’re up for some mental gymnastics and have some time to spare you should definitely watch it!

Settling

Well, Beth and I have been home a little over a week, have both survived our first full work week of work, and actually have the house pretty well set up the way we want it. So, now that we have all of that done I’m actually trying to get some of our honeymoon photos online. It’s sure taking longer than expected, but you’ll be the first to know once I do get things under control. As far as the whole marriage thing goes. Well, I’ve been married so close to a month (counting? who? me? ;-) ) and YAY it’s been awesome! :-D There are too many stories from the honeymoon to try to recount now, so I’ve decided to report on other happenings in the news that I’ve found interesting.

For example, a very interesting article from The Wall Street Journal about how a branch of Indian grocery stores recently re-designed their stores to be more chaotic! That’s right, in India, their target audience is used to shopping in a more crowded environment. An interesting read.

Also, keep the people affected by the earthquake in PerĂº in your prayers. From what I’ve been able to read, the majority of the damage happened to the south of where I lived (in Lima). I wrote an email to my host brother but haven’t heard anything back yet.

Finally, if any of you haven’t heard of David Sedaris I would highly suggest checking out some of his writing. I first heard some of his stories on This American Life, but Beth & I really got hooked when we read one of his books on our honeymoon. He has a way of writing that is captivating, and his stories make you wonder if anyone really could have a life like that! I know that David’s stories aren’t for everyone, but most of the time he just cracks me up. Good thing Beth & I each have a book of his to keep us busy for a while :-D

Mr. Wright Kuhns

Well, It’s been almost two weeks since our wedding & I’m finally finding a little time to post an update here at kuhnsfam.rehearsing 'the kiss' The wedding was awesome. Despite a bit of unwanted rain, having so many family & friends around for the weekend was a blast (and it goes without saying that the whole getting married to Beth part was pretty spectacular too :-D ). Since the wedding Beth & I headed to Albuquerque, camped at the Grand Canyon & caught an awesome sunset after riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tram (part one of the honeymoon). Now, after a week in CA with our families, we’re about to start the long treck home to Goshen. Don’t feel too sorry for us tho, we’re making sure the trip home isn’t too dull (honeymoon part two :-D ). I’ll make sure to get photos from the honeymoon online once we’ve settled in at home, but for now make sure you check out the wedding photos I’ve put online.
